Against the Tide: Repositioning the 8 Functions in Psychology—Richard Owen

October 7, 2022 @ 7:45 pm 8:45 pm Australia/Sydney

Since C.G. Jung first described his 8 types of mental processing over 100 years ago, they were at first neglected, then later taken up again and developed by type theorists and practitioners. However as Jung’s work was widely disregarded by mainstream psychology academia, there has been little reconciliation between type theory and areas such as cognitive psychology or modern consciousness studies. In this presentation Richard will share some ideas from his ongoing work on identifying analogous concepts relating to the 8 functions, in an effort towards reintegrating type and the mainstream.

Type in Tandem: The Magical Alchemy of Connecting Opposing Functions – Sue Blair

October 8, 2022 @ 9:00 am 10:00 am Australia/Sydney

Pivoting is a skill we have all had to master over the past two years. Flexibility is the key, in our outlooks, our expectations and aspirations. Many of us have had plenty of time for introspection.

This gift of time has lead many of us to ask questions. Lots of them! This session explores how we can integrate the perceiving functions to find the wisdom we need to keep on track.

We will explore:

  • Cognitive function combinations
  • Helpful graphics to simplify our explanations
  • Questions which can be posed relating to each of the perceiving functions
  • The importance of intentional application of the functions

Sue Blair

Sue Blair has been working with psychological type for 20 years. She is an international presenter and keynote speaker, as well as a qualified MBTI practitioner and adult educator. She is the author of The Personality Puzzle coaching cards, now used worldwide by coaches and counsellors. She has taught thousands of teachers, parents, students and businesses about the importance of self-awareness and communication. Sue is the recipient of the APTi 2015 Gordon Lawrence Award. This award recognises an outstanding achievement to the field of education.

This session is a keynote session at the Time & Tide—Traditions and Trends in Type conference, 7-9 October online. Personality, Type and other labels—What do they mean; what do they stand for? A Discussion with Peter Geyer

July 14, 2022 @ 7:00 pm 9:30 pm AEST

The language of personality, however presented, can be a minefield of meaning and use, essentially because there are no agreed definitions, interpretations, or perspectives, even in the niche field of psychological type. C.G. Jung chose general language for his constructs, a decision he later reflected on somewhat ruefully; what he meant in particular instances seems to have fallen by the wayside.

So, what is Personality? What is a Type, or a Function? How does Type relate to behaviour, interest or skill. Is Type neoliberal, whether we like it or not? Can there a Type response to pandemics, or conspiracy theories? These questions, and any others that turn up are the focus of a presentation by Peter Geyer, in a casual informal setting.

Peter Geyer
Peter Geyer

Peter Geyer has researched, taught and written about psychological type and related ideas for over 30 years. A former MBTI® and Majors Accrediter, he is the Custodian of AusAPT’s Type Research and Practice Collection.

Party like it’s 1991: Celebrating 30 Years of AusAPT – Phil Kerr

The Australian Association for Psychological Type was formed in 1991 at Australia’s first type conference, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator: Australian Perspectives. This year we’re celebrating the 30th anniversary of those two milestones. Australians studying theology and spirituality in California in the late 1970s encountered the MBTI and were enthused. On their return they ran seminars and workshops that popularised type in religious communities and schools. During the 1980s, use of the MBTI spread to organisations in the private and public sectors. In response to the growing interest, Mary McGuiness established the Institute for Type Development (ITD) in Sydney. In 1986 she (more…)

Talking Type Together with your Vital Relationships – Sterling Bates

November 14, 2021 @ 11:45 am 12:45 pm Australia/Sydney

Scientific studies continue to show that the biggest impact on life satisfaction and happiness is our vital relationships and core social bonds. Medical studies show relationship strength as a major factor in long term health outcomes. Learn what some of this research has to say about the crucial importance of relationships. We will cover multiple models, both psychological type models and other relationship-related tools from outside the psychological type space. We will highlight which models offer insights for relationships and also cover which models and strategies don’t work well for building strong relationships. Attendees will get key tools and tips on how to use the different models to help their own relationships and further, help those they care about, or their clients in their relationships too.

Type & Stress: Your type and mind-body connections – Katie Jones

November 14, 2021 @ 10:15 am 11:15 am Australia/Sydney

Our minds and bodies are intricately connected, and our brain’s main job is to keep us alive and safe from threats. In this interactive workshop, we will use an understanding of both the Myers Briggs Type Indicator, as well as research about how the mind and body are connected, to better understand unique stressors and ways to proactively and reactively respond to stress through both of these tools.

Developing a deeper understanding of stressors and how to recover from stress is important for self-understanding, leadership, and growth, as well as a key to understanding others. Leaders at all levels can use this information to help create psychologically safer spaces for their teams, which Google’s Project Aristotle found as one of the keys to team success. Stress is inevitable, but it is not the end of the story!

November 14, 2021 @ 10:15 am 11:15 am Australia/Sydney

After a year as an MBTI coach, what lessons have been learned?

Topics that will be covered:
*What it’s like to coach someone older than you?
*Where are the new Type enthusiasts making their names known?
*How do you gain traction in a crowded (Type) space?
*How do we fix the disconnect between veterans and amateurs?
*How Type will be applied in the future

Joe Arrigo

Joe Arrigo

Joe Arrigo is a newbie to the professional Type space. What started as a mild interest exploded into an obsession and a coaching business. His goal is to help people find their place in the world by bringing clarity to their personality type. If it can impact a stubborn INTJ like himself, it can certainly do the same for others. He resides primarily on Linkedin and YouTube, and tries to bridge the gap between the Old Guard and New Guard of type.
