Content

Parenting involves looking at the issue from the perspective of the parent and the perspective of the child. The parent’s type as well as the child’s type influence the best strategy for resolving critical life issues that face most children and families. We will look at parenting types and child types while exploring some of these life issues. As always, we will leave with strategies to use to help parents and children learn and grown together in healthy and supportive ways.

Specifically, we will focus on the following topics:

  • September: Belonging – includes examining friendships and forming relationships
  • October: Resilience – includes how to develop a more resilient Nature and the plus and minus for parent and child when a developmental crisis occurs in the family.
  • November: Bullying – explores reactions when your child is bullied or when s/he is the one who bullies others, including the parent
  • December: Empathy expressions and development by type preferences – includes how to recognise the expression of empathy by different types.

At the conclusion of the workshop participants will receive a list of 100+ hints for working with type differences in children.

Should I Laugh or Cry? Exploring the Impact of the fourth (‘inferior’) function with Andrew Mountford

Laugh or cry drama masks reflecting the inferior function

August 17 @ 1:30 pm 4:30 pm AEST

Should I Laugh or Cry? Exploring the Impact of the fourth (‘inferior’) mental function as expressed in an individual’s personality (psychological) type.

Carl Jung observed that an orderly progression emerges for most people in relation to four mental functions based on Perception and Judgement. Isabel Myers developed the MBTI® to implement Jung’s theory of type.

Perception is about ‘all the ways of becoming aware – things, people events or ideas. It involves information gathering, seeking sensation or inspiration – selecting which stimulus to pay attention to.’

Judgement means ‘all the ways of coming to conclusions about what has been perceived. It includes evaluation, choice, analysis and the selection of a response after receiving the stimulus.’

Mary McCaulley, who worked intimately with Isabel Myers, noted that the purpose of the MBTI® was to make the theory of psychological types by C.G. Jung understandable and useful in people’s lives.

The theory goes that individual type development occurs in different ways for different types – but the stages of development follow a typical path. The first or ‘dominant’ preference emerges in childhood (6-12 years). The second or ‘auxiliary’ function appears in adolescence (13-20 years). The third or ‘tertiary’ function appears in early adulthood (20-35 years). The least developed or ‘inferior’ function makes its presence known in mid-life (35-50 years). And after that? Come to the session on 17 August to reflect and discuss. The session title offers a clue…

When we include the use of these functions in the extraverted and introverted ‘world’ we arrive at eight possible preference choices.

Roger Pearman reminds us to keep in mind that the goal is not to equally use all eight functions but to at least recognise their contribution to our lives. Equal use would not be desirable. This would be like eight voices talking at you at the same time and at the same volume. He suggests that ‘chaos of self’ would certainly result.

Conference Round-up: ‘From Shadows to Showtime’, 1-2 September, 2023, Brisbane

It was fabulous to gather in person at Rydges Fortitude Valley, Brisbane, for the 2023 AusAPT Conference. After a few years of online conferences, it was refreshing and energising to connect in person again. It was especially exciting to have type friends join us from overseas (US, UK, Japan, New Zealand) and across Australia. In particular, meeting AusAPT Committee Member, Harumi Gondo from Tokyo in person for the first time was a special highlight.AusAPT Management Committee members, Meredith Fuller and Harumi GondoPre-conference workshopWe kicked off on Thursday evening with a joint pre-conference networking and workshop on Type and Change with our (more…)

Type and Music Preferences with Ian Ball

November 25, 2023 @ 1:45 pm 4:30 pm AEDT

An AusAPT in person event in Melbourne, Victoria

There are many reasons why particular pieces of music attract us and why we go back to those preferences. There are also reasons why particular styles of music are ones we avoid or find unbearable.

In 2006 Elwin Hall and I conducted a workshop at the AusAPT conference exploring these ideas and looked for linkages between one’s preferred type and one’s preferences for music.

This new session reviews the research conducted since then and serves as an update on this theme. The new evidence gives much more confidence about the relationships. There has been a reconceptualisation about music preferences and this will be explained in the session.

It is hoped that participants will have a greater appreciation of the linkages between type and preferences for music with particular attributes. You may be delighted with some live singing!

Ian is a retired Associate Professor from Deakin University. His specialisations were Psychology and Education. He is a Life Member of AusAPT and also a Fellow of the Australian Psychological Society.

Elvis Presley: Exploring the 8 Jungian functions & type development with Mary McGuiness

September 2, 2023 @ 1:30 pm 2:45 pm Australia/Brisbane

Explore the life and music of Elvis Presley, his use of the 8 Jungian functions and type development. We will use the work of Gary & Margaret Hartzler to look at differences between poorly developed and well-developed functions.

This session is a keynote at the From Shadows to Showtime Conference, 1-2 September in Brisbane. Further details below.

Enjoy glimpses of the life and music of Elvis Presley as we explore the 8 Jungian functions and the process of personality development. Type theory tells us that we can use all the 8 Jungian functions (cognitive processes), but each type prefers certain functions and struggles to use and develop the others. Gary and Margaret Hartzler in Functions of Type list several skills associated with each of the 8 functions. These skills illustrate why a poorly developed function will be expressed differently to a function that is well developed. By looking at evidence from Elvis’s life, his music and his own words we will try to identify how he used each function, how his use of the functions changed over time, and how the changes were reflected in his music. And we will use the opportunity to reflect briefly on our own use of each function. This session will include theory, storytelling, some brief interaction and reflection, film and, of course music!

About Mary McGuiness

Mary McGuiness ENFP has 30 years’ experience teaching personality theory and training professionals to use the MBTI and MajorsPTI. She is founding Director of the Institute for Type Development, est.1986, providing advanced training for type professionals and consulting to organisations. Mary served for 10 years on the National Committee of AusAPT, with two years as President. She has published several books and resources on personality, including the best seller You’ve Got Personality. In 2006 Mary received a Life Membership Award from AusAPT.

June 24, 2023 @ 11:00 am 12:30 pm Australia/Sydney

APTi recently posted a new set of ethical standards for the use of psychological type (apti.memberclicks.net/apti-standards).  Lead author Karen Keefer will share the goals and process of this project, and discuss the “hows and whys” of the new standards with us.  Bring your questions and concerns about the ethical use of type in your particular location and setting.  Karen is especially interested in current challenges you are facing, and in feedback on the applicability of these U.S.-based standards both internationally and cross-culturally.

About Karen Keefer

Karen Keefer, MA obtained her MBTI® qualification in 1987, and has used type in a variety of settings over the last 35 years.  She was a trainer for APTi’s MBTI Qualifying Program for 13 years and served as Director of that program.  She is an expert in the technique of type-based guided imagery originated by William Yabroff, and with him co-authored Four Gifts of the Mind, a workbook and CD set for using this technique to promote type development.  In addition to her work as a trainer and consultant, Karen has given numerous presentations at APTi conferences and at chapters.  She is a member and a Past President of Bay Area APT (BAAPT).  Her Best-Fit Type is INTJ.

Free Free and open to all

The session will be online via Zoom. Click below to register and details will be sent to you for how to join.

Pre-reading:

The two below documents are pre-reading for the session. The first document is a short article Karen wrote outlining the harms of type misuse, and the second is the new APTi ethical standards that Karen will discuss in the program.  If people would take the time to read these, that will facilitate the discussion.
