Gottman, Beebe, and Jung – Some Correlations – Vicky Jo Varner

This session describes John Gottman’s contemporary research and his conception of the “Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse,” with their disastrous impact on relationships. These “Horsemen” can be correlated with John Beebe and Jung’s work on archetypes. We will conduct a visualization to help participants come into relationship with their own experience of one of these “Horsemen,” and thereby capture it phenomenologically. Please bring paper and some art supplies—colored pencils or markers or crayons.

Motivation in the age of uncertainty – Catherine Stothart

Feeling motivated is an essential part of mental health and well-being but many people do not know what really motivates them or how to sustain their motivation. Temperament theory is a perfect tool to help our clients connect to their sense of purpose. But motivation is also about persistence and resilience. Catherine will share an approach to motivation which links temperament theory to academic theories of motivation. In temperament groups, we will explore the beliefs that can act as accelerators or brakes on our performance and work out strategies for persistence and resilience which fit with who we are. By bridging the gap between the temperament lens of type and academia we can bring the benefits of both worlds to our clients to enable them to live more fulfilled lives. This creates a powerful combination for practical action to sustain our motivation and well-being in our uncertain world. The session will be interactive with break out groups and activities.

Catherine Stothart is a Leadership Coach with Airbus and a partner in Google’s Mastery Faculty of virtual facilitators. She has coached and trained hundreds of managers in the private sector to develop their leadership and communication skills. She also works with schools and colleges. Catherine is the author of ‘How to Get On with Anyone’ (2018, Pearson) – based on Interaction Styles, it’s a guide to building better relationships with others. She is a Fellow of the CIPD, has an MSc, and is currently BAPT’s Director of Events.

Stress and Resilience in the World of Covid-19 – Mary McGuiness

The world has experienced enormous change and stress in 2020 and 2021. Covid-19 has impacted on our personal lives, family life, work life, social life and, for some, our physical and/or emotional health. People have responded in many different ways. Type theory suggests that each type will experience the stress differently and will likely use different strategies to cope. Let’s explore how the changes have impacted on us to see what impact personality type has had. We will also look more broadly at what Jung and type can tell us about stress and resilience. What does the theory say about stress for each type? And, more importantly, how do we take care of ourselves, and each other, so that we keep some balance in our lives and can learn something from the experience.

Four Flavors of Type – Dario Nardi

What flavor of your type are you?
Having an answer can make a difference. Some people really puzzle over their best-fit type. Or, they feel unusual for their type, perhaps as a result of upbringing or type development. Or, they are making a career change and want extra advice. What’s the saying, “Every ENFP is like every other ENFP, like some other ENFPs, and like no other ENFP.” Some differences are small, and some really matter.
Lately, research is coming together on flavors of type. Neuroscience data supports that people use their brains in ways that meet their type preferences. They also develop in ways that reflect their cultural upbringing, career choice, and more. These brain differences sort into clusters or as 4 cardinal points around a wheel. We will explore 4 flavors of type: Dominant, Creative, Normalizing or Harmonizing. (Thanks Dr. Victor Gulenko for these names.) This includes examples from specific types and reference materials that you can use.

Dario Nardi, Ph.D. is a renowned author and researcher in neuroscience, personality, and body-mind practices. He won Distinguished Teacher of the year in 2011 while at UCLA. His books include Neuroscience of Personality, 8 Keys to Self-Leadership, Jung on Yoga, The Magic Diamond, and other titles. He created the Personality Types iPhone app and the Cognitive Processes Assessment of 8 Jungian functions. Since 2006, Dario has conducted hands-on brain research, utilizing insights of real-time EEG technology. Dario was certified in type since 1994.

Goldilocks and the 8 Cognitive Processes – Sue Blair

Assumption: The perfect human being has not yet been created. Even Mary Poppins said she was only “practically perfect” (in every way!!!) So, how, why and where do we go wrong and what can we do about it? The truth is that we all use all of these functions, but we tend not to use each of them equally well. There is a time and energy component to their use and, for some, use of a function is habitual and for others it is momentary. In this session we put the Goldilocks Theory to the test. We will take a look at each of the cognitive processes, define them and then suggest ways in which we can use each of them ‘too much’, ‘too little’ and (on a good day) ‘just right’. There is no better place than a Type conference to gather our combined wisdom and learn from each other about what it is really like to be us. A place where we honour diversity and practice inclusivity. We will learn, laugh and leave enlightened.

Sue has been working with psychological type for 20 years. She is an international presenter and keynote speaker, as well as a qualified MBTI practitioner and adult educator. She is the author of The Personality Puzzle coaching cards, now used worldwide by coaches and counsellors. It’s time to Thrive! Will you be one of our Conference Presenters in 2020?

The Australian and New Zealand Type communities are coming together for Thrive: AusAPT in Auckland 2020 on 5-8 November and we are inviting you to submit your Session Proposal to be a presenter at the conference.

The Australian Association of Psychological Type (AusAPT) expands the knowledge of psychological type and supports the ethical use of psychological type and type instruments.

Bringing our community and conference presenters together every year is at the heart of what we do, and our conference curation continues to improve year on year. To help us help you, and our conference delegates, we have streamlined our guidelines, submission and selection processes. You can submit your proposal online in 2020.

Organising a conference in these challenging times of COVID-19 impacts means we need to be ready to shift to different ways of connecting and offering community. This is built into our contingency planning including the option of going to a virtual conference if required. Whichever way we eventually go, our presenters are always critical and central to our conference and community and we invite your submissions to present.
