Gottman, Beebe, and Jung – Some Correlations – Vicky Jo Varner

November 13, 2021 @ 4:15 pm 5:15 pm Australia/Sydney

This session describes John Gottman’s contemporary research and his conception of the “Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse,” with their disastrous impact on relationships. These “Horsemen” can be correlated with John Beebe and Jung’s work on archetypes. We will conduct a visualization to help participants come into relationship with their own experience of one of these “Horsemen,” and thereby capture it phenomenologically. Please bring paper and some art supplies—colored pencils or markers or crayons.

From Type to Psyche, Self and Soul – David Pool

November 13, 2021 @ 10:15 am 11:15 am Australia/Sydney

We will examine some of the psychological ideas related to Carl Jung’s dynamic model of the human psyche. Special attention will be paid to the place type plays in the current scholarly landscape. By critically examining different perspectives on the psyche, the soul, and the self we will attempt a fresh exploration of what type is with an aim to break free of habitual and ingrained assumptions, beliefs and dogmas.

In addition to examining questions like “what is type?”, “what is the role of the unconscious?” and “what is attitude?” we will explore the experience of pursuing a PhD in Jungian psychology. You may wonder how receptive Jungian and Archetypal psychology is to Type notions. The answer is a mixed bag. Finally we’ll touch upon some intriguing and controversial ideas about the difference between classification into categories and a structural functional model of the human psyche – moving from the typical to the unique.

David Pool

David Pool
David Pool has a Bachelors degree in Psychology and multiple type certifications. He is enrolled in the Depth, Jungian and Archetypal studies doctoral program at Pacifica Graduate Institute in Carpenteria California. This viewpoint into Jungian studies, the Type community, and mainstream academia grounds David’s viewpoint in three separate disciplines. David’s thesis is that an underlying psyche stands at the center of these three streams, his mission is to unite the different approaches while exercising a critical analytical approach.

Type Development and Spirituality of Japanese Culture – Fusae Harada

November 13, 2021 @ 1:30 pm 2:30 pm Australia/Sydney

As an archipelago, Japan has kept its cultural independence for well over a millennium. Incorporating Buddhist influences from China, Japan still maintains a unique spiritual and cultural core that remains present to this day. Using typology, this talk will explore questions such as: Does bushido (the samurai code of honour) reveal any cultural type preferences? What type preferences does modern Japan have? And in what ways are those current dominant preferences rooted in Japan’s culture of 1000 years ago?

Fusae Harada

Talking Theory Together – Richard Owen

November 12, 2021 @ 7:45 pm 8:45 pm Australia/Sydney

With a divergence of type theory between Jung, MBTI and many individual experts in the field, is there a way to create a cohesive revised narrative to carry type forward into its second century? Can we successfully reintegrate with mainstream personality psychology? How can type be reinterpreted and positioned in a way that makes it more acceptable to critics? Richard will discuss several key issues in type theory and some of his proposed solutions to them.

Friend or foe? The Inferior Function – Angelina Bennet

November 12, 2021 @ 7:45 pm 8:45 pm Australia/Sydney

The inferior function – sometimes called the 4th function – is one of the most fascinating aspects of our psyche. It is often overlooked as it does not feature in our type code and it tends to be regarded as the “not me” side of our personality. Yet it has an almost continuous presence in our everyday lives. Many people are familiar with Naomi Quenk’s ‘In the Grip’ theory, in which the inferior function erupts during stress; however, it makes its presence felt in many other situations, although we may not consciously be aware of it. In this session, I will invite the audience to consider the different roles that their inferior function takes in their lives, and how it can be a hindrance, a source of negative perception, a haven, a source of excitement, and a gateway for development.

Angelina is a Chartered Occupational Psychologist and Director of Type Pro, a Type practitioner’s training organisation, with over 20 years’ experience with Type. She is the author of The Shadows of Type: Psychological Type over seven Levels of Development, and is considered to be a thought-leader in the development of Type theory. Type and Transgender: any relationship or implications? with Meredith Fuller, Gunilla Burrowes & Mark Toner

November 14, 2021 @ 9:00 am 10:00 am Australia/Sydney

Is transgender identity related to Type? What are the implications in career development of the T and F functions?

This session will be presented in 4 sections with plenty of interaction and input from the audience:
1) Can Type Theory predict and explain gender fluidity?
2) Looking at the Judging Function, what impact will the change in gender have on a trans person’s career after they have transitioned?
3) Is there any indication from Type Theory that would provide insight into a person’s motivation to transition or revert?
4) What can workplaces do to understand and support their transgender staff?

This session is presented by three Australian speakers:

Meredith Fuller

AusAPT Life Member Meredith Fuller is a psychologist and author with 35 years using Type, including the design and implementation of early accreditation training. Meredith has experience with transitioning and transgender clients and her psychologist step-uncle came from Holland to conduct the first ‘gender reassignment clinic’ in 1960’s Melbourne.

Gunilla Burrowes is an electrical engineer with a broad range of industry and academic experience and is passionate about workplaces becoming more inclusive. She co-founded Gender Matters with Mark Toner 10 years ago which provides advice to organisations on gender issues and inclusive practices. Gunilla is an accredited Myers Briggs trainer.

Motivation in the age of uncertainty – Catherine Stothart

November 12, 2021 @ 6:30 pm 7:30 pm Australia/Sydney

Feeling motivated is an essential part of mental health and well-being but many people do not know what really motivates them or how to sustain their motivation. Temperament theory is a perfect tool to help our clients connect to their sense of purpose. But motivation is also about persistence and resilience. Catherine will share an approach to motivation which links temperament theory to academic theories of motivation. In temperament groups, we will explore the beliefs that can act as accelerators or brakes on our performance and work out strategies for persistence and resilience which fit with who we are. By bridging the gap between the temperament lens of type and academia we can bring the benefits of both worlds to our clients to enable them to live more fulfilled lives. This creates a powerful combination for practical action to sustain our motivation and well-being in our uncertain world. The session will be interactive with break out groups and activities.

Mindset Shift – Evolving Our Conversations About Individuation – Katherine W Hirsh

November 12, 2021 @ 6:30 pm 7:30 pm Australia/Sydney

Type has great potential as a self-awareness tool, yet this frequently remains untapped because its users struggle to answer the “So What?” and “Now what?” questions, missing the chance to relate type theory to people’s lives. Part of what’s needed may be a deeper understanding of type, however we also frequently underestimate the barriers to increasing self-awareness and enacting behavior change.

I will describe three mindsets that can derail our efforts. Mindset one involves believing people need to know why they should do something, rather than showing them the negative outcome if they fail to make a change. Mindset two entails believing external motivations for growth and change, couched in terms of control and compliance, are more effective than internal motivations expressed in terms of mastery and engagement. Mindset number three hinges on the belief in a zero-sum world where individuation is an outcome to be reached, rather than an ongoing journey to be navigated.
