SUMMARY:C G Jung's Psychological Types Reading Group with Peter Geyer - Orientation session
DESCRIPTION:Ever wanted to read C G Jung’s Psychological Types but found it challenging or daunting? If so\, you’re not alone! It’s the foundation of all that we do in psychological type and AusAPT\, so we’re pleased to be kicking off the Psychological Types Reading Group with an orientation session on 20 October. \n\n\n\nThe Reading Group will be an opportunity for AusAPT members to read C G Jung’s Psychological Types together over about a year with the guidance of Peter Geyer\, custodian of the Type Research and Practice Collection and long-time researcher and presenter on Jung and Psychological Types. We’ll meet monthly to discuss the concepts and ideas we’ve read. \n\n\n\nThe orientation session is free and open to all on Thursday 20 October\, 7pm – 8:30pm AEST/Melbourne time. But note that you will need to be an AusAPT member once we kick off on 10 November. \n\n\n\nRegister in advance for the 20 October orientation session:https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZItduqorTkvH9ygNM_Z0PncCGG5Ba9MVomw After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the session. We’ll talk more about how the Reading Group will work in the orientation session\, but here are a few key details for once we start: \n\n\n\n1/ We’ll meet on the 2nd Thursday of each month starting 10 November\, 7-8:30pm Melbourne time. \n\n\n\n2/ The Reading Group is FREE for 2022/23 AusAPT members and will run till around October 2023. \n\n\n\n3/ You need to be an AusAPT member to join in the Reading Group from 10 November. \n\n\n\nBelow is advice prepared by Peter Geyer about what to expect with commentary also on editions of the text. \n\n\n\nPeter Geyer\n\n\n\nAdvice ahead of the Orientation session and Reading Group\n\n\n\nThe following is a guide for those interested in engaging with others in an online discussion of C.G. Jung’s book Psychological Types facilitated by Peter Geyer. \n\n\n\nThe discussion involves regular meeting and set reading of chapters or parts of chapters in sequence (some chapters are very long). \n\n\n\nThe emphasis is on what Jung wrote at the time of initial publishing (1921/3) rather than later commentaries\, although these can be part of a discussion. \n\n\n\nThere are many editions of Psychological Types\, even in English\, where there are two translators of the original text: H.G. Baynes (1923) and R.F.C. Hull’s revision  (1971?) \n\n\n\nHere’s one link to what’s available online. A Google search can also be useful. \n\n\n\nAny edition of this text is suitable for the discussion\, as both translations are held in the AusAPT TRPC\, including digital editions of recent publications.  \n\n\n\nThe Baynes translation is preferred for several reasons\, one being an informative preface where the translator explains his perspective. This does not appear elsewhere and will be provided to discussion participants prior to the first session. The language is also that of the period in which Psychological Types written and so appeals to the historically minded. This is not to say that the Hull translation is inadequate\, far from it. \n\n\n\nThe idea of the discussion is to discover and discuss what Jung actually wrote. It isn’t an exercise in dogma and belief. The discussion can involve comments and works of contemporaries if desired. The Collection has several relevant books and articles from the period up to the Second World War. \n\n\n\nApart from the regular meetings\, anticipated to be monthly\, members of the group may contact Peter Geyer at any time if there are queries or a desire for discussion on a particular point. \n\n\n\nYou can download the opening pages of Psychological Types (1923 edition) for pre-reading for the orientation session here: \n\n\n\nOpening pages of 1923 edition of Psychological Types (attached)Download

SUMMARY:The Trimorphic Ethoi of Psychological Types—Vicky Jo Varner
DESCRIPTION:Psychological Types is typically presented as a singular idea within one discipline. However\, within that discipline\, it can be discerned that there are three prevalent perspectives\, or ethoi\, in conveying the types. This session delves into these three different ethoi and relates them to the psychological types model\, interspersed with interactive exercises to help attendees experience each of them and confront their differences. This presentation is academic in nature with cutting-edge content\, so be prepared to immerse yourself in something that is philosophically challenging yet rewarding. \n\n\n\nVIcky Jo Varner\n\n\n\nVicky Jo Varner\n\n\n\nDr. Vicky Jo Varner holds a PhD in Depth Psychology with an emphasis on Jungian and Archetypal Studies. An MBTI Master Practitioner and certified Life Coach\, she is ranked as a Professional Certified Coach (PCC) with the International Coach Federation. SUMMARY:Creating a Type Community and Business in Japan—Harumi Gondo
DESCRIPTION:Creating a Type Community and Business in Japan – How I went from charging 100 to 100\,000 yen a session\n\n\n\nHarumi Gondo got off the plane from the US to Tokyo 9 years ago. She barely spoke the language and experienced severe culture shock in Japan. She went from knowing nothing about the culture and knowing no one to managing a busy type community of mothers and a growing business contracting the team of mothers who have now become expert practitioners in Type. \n\n\n\nShe will share her experiences with Japanese mothers\, who highly prioritize conformity and keeping their mouth shut. She will also share her experience in building a growth-based Type community and how she as an ENFJ avoided poverty and poor health to achieving a six figure income through knowing and developing her Type. \n\n\n\nHarumi Gondo\n\n\n\nHarumi Gondo\n\n\n\nHarumi Gondo was certified in MBTI in 2013 and began training others in Type the day after she was certified. She has over 8000 hours of training experience. She established a type-based community in Japan and founded a company that runs training for companies. \n\n\n\nThis is a session at the Time & Tide—Traditions and Trends in Type conference\, 7-9 October online. SUMMARY:Traditions and Trends in Delivering Type Learning Events - Susan Nash
DESCRIPTION:Traditionally\, type learning events were held in-person. With the pandemic\, those assumptions were challenged and many type professionals have moved their learning and coaching practices to the virtual world. With the emergence from the pandemic\, we are faced with a unique opportunity to reframe how we deliver effective learning type interventions. To what extent can we combine in-person and virtual sessions? How might hybrid sessions work with remote and in-person participants? How can we optimise technology to streamline the learning experience and appeal to different learning styles? How can we change how we deliver in-person events to ensure maximum engagement and retention? \n\n\n\nIn this hands-on session\, participants will walk away with a wide variety of activities to add flexibility and relevance to type sessions together with a clearer understanding of the engagement skills required when facilitating adult\, active learning. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSusan Nash\n\n\n\nSusan Nash is owner of EM-Power a consulting firm which provides organizational development and training services to help businesses achieve results through optimization of people. EM-Power has been in business for 25 years. Susan Nash is author of Flawless Facilitation (published in 2019) as well as 11 other books 9 of which relate to personality type.) Susan is past president of APTi\, winner of the APTi 2017 President’s award and author of the Global Trainer Certification program\, winner of a Branden Hall Gold Award. \n\n\n\nThis session is a keynote session at the Time & Tide—Traditions and Trends in Type conference\, 7-9 October online. SUMMARY:Work-Life Balance\, Stress and the Process of Individuation—Mary McGuiness
DESCRIPTION:The individuation process is a term used by Carl Gustav Jung to describe the process of becoming inwardly whole\, discovering one’s true self\, beyond the mask of the persona and ego-centered life. Individuation generally has a profound healing effect on the person. It is a process that allows us to be our most creative and to fulfil the soul’s deepest desire. \n\n\n\nOur busy lives sometimes hinder our growth towards wholeness as the stress reduces our cognitive functioning and emotional intelligence. Work-Life Balance is essential in reducing stress and allowing the process of growth and individuation to occur. We will explore how research has suggested some ‘best practices’ that can help us to prevent stress and improve resilience so that we can function at our best. We will look at these practices and some suggestions Jung gave us on how to facilitate our own growth and individuation. \n\n\n\nMary McGuiness\n\n\n\nMary McGuiness\n\n\n\nMary McGuiness ENFP has 30 years experience teaching personality theory and training professionals to use the MBTI instrument and MajorsPTI. SUMMARY:Type and Music Preferences—Ian Ball
DESCRIPTION:There are many reasons why particular pieces of music attract us and why we go back to those preferences. There are also reasons why particular styles of music are ones we avoid or find unbearable. \n\n\n\nIn 2006 Elwin Hall and I conducted a workshop at the AusAPT conference exploring these ideas and looked for linkages between one’s preferred type and one’s preferences for music. \n\n\n\nThis new session for the conference on Time & Tide: Traditions and Trends in Type reviews the research conducted since then and serves as an update on this theme. The new evidence gives much more confidence about the relationships. There has been a reconceptualisation about music preferences and this will be explained in the session. \n\n\n\nIt is hoped that participants will have a greater appreciation of the linkages between type and preferences for music with particular attributes. \n\n\n\nIan Ball\n\n\n\nIan Ball\n\n\n\nIan is a retired Associate Professor from Deakin University. His specialisations were Psychology and Education. He is a Life Member of AusAPT and also a Fellow of the Australian Psychological Society. \n\n\n\nThis is a session at the Time & Tide—Traditions and Trends in Type conference\, 7-9 October online. SUMMARY:Underutilized Oppositions in the Lenses We Use—Sterling Bates
DESCRIPTION:Underutilized Oppositions in the Lenses We Use: Essential Motivators and Interaction Styles with Sterling Bates \n\n\n\nA talk about an underutilized resource in the world of psychological type\, the 6 dynamics from Essential Motivators (Temperament) and Interaction Styles. They are powerful both in helping you flex to meet someone else’s needs and to discover points of commonality. For example\, every Essential Motivator has both a dynamic that aligns with and two dynamics where they are opposing with the other three Essential Motivators. Like Polarity Thinking\, a key to using dynamics is knowing when it is the right time to flex\, and when it is the right time to rely on your naturally preferred dynamic. \n\n\n\nIn this session\, I will familiarize attendees with the dynamics; those unfamiliar will get a great grounding in the dynamics; and provide tips and tricks attendees can use themselves as well as activities to use in their personal life and with clients. This will include uses in whole type best-fit\, communication\, work problems\, delegation\, Situational Leadership®\, and relationship issues. \n\n\n\nSterling Bates\n\n\n\nSterling Bates\n\n\n\nSterling’s combination of technology\, mathematics\, business\, marketing\, OD and psychological type led him to found Step Research\, a psychology software company. Previously at Disney for 13 years in IT and Marketing; and on the APTi board for 4 years. \n\n\n\nThis is a session at the Time & Tide—Traditions and Trends in Type conference\, 7-9 October online. SUMMARY:Against the Tide: Repositioning the 8 Functions in Psychology—Richard Owen
DESCRIPTION:Since C.G. Jung first described his 8 types of mental processing over 100 years ago\, they were at first neglected\, then later taken up again and developed by type theorists and practitioners. However as Jung’s work was widely disregarded by mainstream psychology academia\, there has been little reconciliation between type theory and areas such as cognitive psychology or modern consciousness studies. In this presentation Richard will share some ideas from his ongoing work on identifying analogous concepts relating to the 8 functions\, in an effort towards reintegrating type and the mainstream. \n\n\n\nRichard Owen\n\n\n\nRichard Owen\n\n\n\nBAPT Treasurer Richard Owen is an organisational psychologist and coach based in Brighton\, UK. A broad theorist of Type: from Jung to MBTI®\, to the depth typology of Dr John Beebe. Richard’s Personality Parts™ model aims to uniquely integrate these & many other perspectives. \n\n\n\nThis is a session at the Time & Tide—Traditions and Trends in Type conference\, 7-9 October online. SUMMARY:Temperament: Tradition or Trend? - Catherine Stothart
DESCRIPTION:Temperament: Tradition or Trend? Bringing Temperament up to date for 21st Century Leaders \n\n\n\nThirty years ago\, few people talked of emotional intelligence\, neuroscience\, positive psychology\, or mental well-being. Now there is widespread interest in popular psychology\, and people are much more aware of their psychological needs. \n\n\n\nThirty years ago\, leaders in organisations could operate in a command and control way. Now millennials want their leaders to be empathic. The role of the leader-manager is now less an overseer of task completion and more an enabler of self-motivation. \n\n\n\nIn this context\, temperament – which explains why we do what we do – is the perfect tool to enable leaders to lead their team to fulfil their purpose and potential. Catherine’s approach to temperament links our core psychological needs to the essential leadership capabilities of engaging\, developing\, delegating and connecting. In this session she will share a practical toolkit to enable leaders to motivate their teams\, improve their well-being and feel motivated themselves. \n\n\n\nCatherine Stothart\n\n\n\nCatherine Stothart\n\n\n\nCatherine Stothart is a Leadership Coach with 30 years’ experience in top multi-national companies – currently Airbus and Google. She uses personality type in her work and brings the best thinking about communication and motivation to a wider audience in a way that makes it usable and actionable. Her 2018 book\, published by Pearson\, How to Get On with Anyone\, is based on Interaction Styles. Her second book\, Motivation: The Ultimate Guide to Leading your Team\, published by Routledge\, comes out in 2022 and is based on temperament. \n\n\n\nThis is a session at the Time & Tide—Traditions and Trends in Type conference\, 7-9 October online. It is one of 17 sessions presented over 3 days\, all recorded in case you can’t attend live. SUMMARY:Cognitive Functions and Enneagram: Complementary Power - Teodora Paucean
DESCRIPTION:This session promotes the usage of type (cognitive functions) and Enneagram together\, as two systems that can complement each other beautifully in the process of improving emotional well-being\, as well as relational and professional satisfaction. Both theoretical concepts and practical implications will be covered. \n\n\n\nThe presentation will first focus on describing theoretical ideas related to both cognitive functions and Enneagram and then\, it will explore the interplay between these two systems in one’s personal development journey. Case studies will be presented to illustrate how people with the same four-letter code might take a different approach in their personal development journey if they have a different Enneagram type. \n\n\n\nThe last 15 minutes of the session will be dedicated to discussion and questions. \n\n\n\nTeodora Paucean\n\n\n\nTeodora Paucean\n\n\n\nTeodora Paucean is a personal development coach and trainer with a focus on self-discovery and self-awareness. SUMMARY:Doing the Parenting Dance with Elizabeth Murphy\, Mollie Allen & Erin Smith
DESCRIPTION:When parents first learn they are going to have a baby images of the child begin to form. Visions of playing and learning together are almost always positive. When the child arrives these hopes and dreams begin to be realized. Then the child walks and talks and has a mind of his own. Now the real job of parenting begins as the parents adjust their preconceived images to match the child and the child learns to manage his energies to develop into all he can be. This is the parenting dance everyone does\, but the rhythms and tones are different for each parent/child combination. \n\n\n\nThis workshop explores common developmental challenges all children face and how type can play a part in the experience for the parent/child combination. After looking at the issue (such as the quest for independence at adolescence) educators will give examples of how this was expressed in the classroom and offer hints for working with the different types. Come enjoy a glimpse into the parenting dance with type differences for a few selected developmental milestones. \n\n\n\nAs part of our Type & Life Series\, this event is online via Zoom\, free and open to all. \n\n\n\nYou are invited to a Zoom meeting. When: Sep 18\, 2022 10:00 AM Canberra\, Melbourne\, Sydney \n\n\n\nRegister in advance for this meeting:https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZYuf-Cvrj8oHtNrGC7q33HCPYo8CqHCf4S5 \n\n\n\nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. \n\n\n\nAbout the presenters\n\n\n\nElizabeth Murphy \n\n\n\nElizabeth Murphy (INFP) is a psychologist who has worked with type concepts since the early 1980s. SUMMARY:Personality\, Type and other labels—What do they mean; what do they stand for? A Discussion with Peter Geyer
DESCRIPTION:The language of personality\, however presented\, can be a minefield of meaning and use\, essentially because there are no agreed definitions\, interpretations\, or perspectives\, even in the niche field of psychological type. C.G. Jung chose general language for his constructs\, a decision he later reflected on somewhat ruefully; what he meant in particular instances seems to have fallen by the wayside. \n\n\n\nSo\, what is Personality? What is a Type\, or a Function? How does Type relate to behaviour\, interest or skill. Is Type neoliberal\, whether we like it or not? Can there a Type response to pandemics\, or conspiracy theories? These questions\, and any others that turn up are the focus of a presentation by Peter Geyer\, in a casual informal setting. \n\n\n\nPeter Geyer\n\n\n\nPeter Geyer has researched\, taught and written about psychological type and related ideas for over 30 years. A former MBTI® and Majors Accrediter\, he is the Custodian of AusAPT’s Type Research and Practice Collection. \n\n\n\nJoin us from 6:30pm for 7pm at Epicentre\, the home of Meredith Fuller & Brian Walsh \n\n\n\nRSVP by 1st July to Meredith Fuller by email meredithfuller56@gmail.com \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto by Aaron Burden on Unsplash
