SUMMARY:Type and Music Preferences with Ian Ball
DESCRIPTION:An AusAPT in person event in Melbourne\, Victoria \n\n\n\nThere are many reasons why particular pieces of music attract us and why we go back to those preferences. There are also reasons why particular styles of music are ones we avoid or find unbearable. \n\n\n\nIn 2006 Elwin Hall and I conducted a workshop at the AusAPT conference exploring these ideas and looked for linkages between one’s preferred type and one’s preferences for music. \n\n\n\nThis new session reviews the research conducted since then and serves as an update on this theme. The new evidence gives much more confidence about the relationships. There has been a reconceptualisation about music preferences and this will be explained in the session. \n\n\n\nIt is hoped that participants will have a greater appreciation of the linkages between type and preferences for music with particular attributes. You may be delighted with some live singing! \n\n\n\nIan Ball\n\n\n\nIan Ball\n\n\n\nIan is a retired Associate Professor from Deakin University. His specialisations were Psychology and Education. He is a Life Member of AusAPT and also a Fellow of the Australian Psychological Society. \n\n\n\nThis was a session at the online Time & Tide—Traditions and Trends in Type conference in 2022. \n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP by contacting Meredith Fuller – meredith@ausapt.org.au \n\n\n\nEntry:  bring a plate or drink to share. Join us at 1:45pm for a 2pm start.

SUMMARY:Personality and Parenting: Meeting the needs of parent and child – how is this possible? A course with Sue Blair

Learn strategies for parenting and meeting the needs of both parent and child through the lens of psychological type. \n\n\n\nDates & times: Four x 90 minute sessions each week in November\, 2023.\n\n\n\nSaturday 4\, 11\, 18 & 25 November 12 noon to 1:30pm AEST/Sydney time – see below for further details including time in other times zones.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMeeting the needs of parent and child – how is this possible?\n\n\n\nAUSAPT is delighted to offer a 4-week program on parenting. Sue Blair will lead you through a fascinating exploration of how Type influences everyday distractions\, dilemmas and dramas. How can everyone in a family get their needs met? What shifts can be made to facilitate a positive and rewarding family life? How can you set yourself up to succeed? \n\n\n\nThis is a valuable opportunity for a small group of parents who are united in wanting to do the best for their children.  There is so much that can be done to enhance the parenting experience and improve outcomes for the people we care about the most. \n\n\n\nYou will learn\, laugh and leave enlightened!!! \n\n\n\nSession Focus and Dates:\n\n\n\nThis course will be delivered over 4 online sessions on Saturdays in November\, 2023 – each 90 minutes long. \n\n\n\nAll sessions are Saturday 12 noon AEDT Sydney/Melbourne. This is 11am Brisbane\, 9am\, Perth\, 10am JT Tokyo\, 2pm NZDT or check your local time for the the first session on 4 November\, noting that in the US\, Canada and other parts of the world\, this will be the evening before or very early AM in the UK/Europe. \n\n\n\nSessionFocusDate (AEDT)1Meeting the needs of Extraverts and Introverts4 November2Meeting the needs of Sensing and Intuiting11 November3Meeting the needs of Thinking and Feeling18 November4Putting it all together – understanding our stress triggers25 November\n\n\n\nSession Details\n\n\n\nSession 1: Meeting the needs of Extraverts and Introverts \n\n\n\nThis session briefly reviews these preferences and then looks more deeply into what it means within the family group. Every family has a different combination and most families need to be bi-lingual in both styles so that the needs of each person can be met. What problems can occur? What happens when parent and child differ? What happens when they are the same? It’s not as obvious as you may think. Being able to adapt is essential. Parents – please remember – you must have your needs met too! \n\n\n\nSession 2: Meeting the needs of Sensing and Intuiting \n\n\n\nThis session looks beyond the usual analysis of Sensing and Intuiting to a new perspective when looking at these functions in combination with the Judging and Perceiving functions. i.e. SJ\, SP\, NJ and NP. This opens up a whole new vista of diversity. We often don’t realise our natural bias when parenting. Nor do we understand what it feels like to perceive in a different way. We will explore how to spot these differences in your child\, how to experience them for yourself and how to understand what’s going on so that\, as parents\, you can set yourself up to succeed.   \n\n\n\nSession 3: Meeting the needs of Thinking and Feeling \n\n\n\nWhen it comes to ‘care and support’\, which is typically thought to be in the ‘Feeling’ domain\, ‘Thinkers’ have very different needs and offer a very different quality of support. This is often misunderstood by the ‘Feelers’. Seeing as parenting is very connected to offering care and support\, I think it is a good lens to explore. It can also be a key issue when co-parenting if you are opposite on this dichotomy. As in session two\, we will do a deeper dive into how Thinking and Feeling combines with the Judging and Perceiving preferences. This will reveal significant differences which\, if understood\, can lead to a great deal more harmony in the home. \n\n\n\nSession 4: Putting it all together – understanding our stress triggers \n\n\n\nEveryone attending will have a different combination of personalities. No two homes are the same! We will take a look at these combinations and see what can be done to make your home life calmer\, less stressed and more satisfying. Parenting is the most important role you have in this world. Taking the time to really ‘see’ each of your children and adapt to their needs is your gift to them. Meanwhile\, they also need to know that their parents have needs too. At the end of day it would be great if your children say “I was well parented by imperfect parents”. We will never get it perfectly right\, but we can feel so much better about it when we absolutely know we did our best. Myers-Briggs gives us the opportunity to understand who we are parenting through the personality type lens. It’s not all you need to know but\, my goodness\, it’s an enormous help!   \n\n\n\nAbout Sue Blair\n\n\n\nSue Blair\n\n\n\nSue has been working with psychological type for over 20 years and is well known to many at AusAPT. She is an author\, coach\, educator\, presenter and keynote speaker. SUMMARY:Mapping the Shadow: A Type-Based Approach to Shadow Work - Max Chegwyn
DESCRIPTION:Discover how to integrate the shadow using Type and the Seven Habits of Individuation model. In this presentation we will explore the common ways in which Type maps to Persona-Shadow dynamics and the different practices each Type can use for integration and psychospiritual growth. \n\n\n\nJungian Shadow Work is increasingly being used as a coaching tool. More people are recognising the benefits of integrating deeper aspects of themselves to bring balance to their lives\, careers\, and relationships. However\, the shadow is not something that can be easily captured in a concept or identified independently. In this presentation\, we will discuss how Type can be used as a foundation for mapping and integrating the shadow. We will examine the most common ways Type correlates with Persona-Shadow dynamics and how this serves as a valuable tool for identifying shadow material. Finally\, we will explore how different classifications of shadow material can be integrated using the Seven Habits of Individuation model. \n\n\n\nAbout Max Chegwyn\n\n\n\nMax Chegwyn is a psychospiritual educator and coach dedicated to helping freedom-minded individuals develop self-knowledge. As the curator of the Seven Habits of Individuation model\, Max focuses on fostering individuation and psychospiritual growth. SUMMARY:Elvis Presley: Exploring the 8 Jungian functions & type development with Mary McGuiness
DESCRIPTION:Explore the life and music of Elvis Presley\, his use of the 8 Jungian functions and type development. We will use the work of Gary & Margaret Hartzler to look at differences between poorly developed and well-developed functions. \n\n\n\nThis session is a keynote at the From Shadows to Showtime Conference\, 1-2 September in Brisbane. Further details below. \n\n\n\nEnjoy glimpses of the life and music of Elvis Presley as we explore the 8 Jungian functions and the process of personality development. Type theory tells us that we can use all the 8 Jungian functions (cognitive processes)\, but each type prefers certain functions and struggles to use and develop the others. Gary and Margaret Hartzler in Functions of Type list several skills associated with each of the 8 functions. These skills illustrate why a poorly developed function will be expressed differently to a function that is well developed. By looking at evidence from Elvis’s life\, his music and his own words we will try to identify how he used each function\, how his use of the functions changed over time\, and how the changes were reflected in his music. And we will use the opportunity to reflect briefly on our own use of each function. This session will include theory\, storytelling\, some brief interaction and reflection\, film and\, of course music! \n\n\n\nAbout Mary McGuiness\n\n\n\nMary McGuiness ENFP has 30 years’ experience teaching personality theory and training professionals to use the MBTI and MajorsPTI. She is founding Director of the Institute for Type Development\, est.1986\, providing advanced training for type professionals and consulting to organisations. Mary served for 10 years on the National Committee of AusAPT\, with two years as President. She has published several books and resources on personality\, including the best seller You’ve Got Personality. In 2006 Mary received a Life Membership Award from AusAPT. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nConference Details\n\n\n\nAusAPT-2023-sessions-programDownload

SUMMARY:From Shadows to Showtime: Moving into the Light - Angelina Bennet
DESCRIPTION:Considering the nature of the shadow\, how it is formed and how it can shed light on our untapped potential. \n\n\n\nThis session is a keynote at the From Shadows to Showtime Conference\, 1-2 September in Brisbane. Further details below. \n\n\n\nAlthough the pandemic wasn’t what anyone asked for\, being in lock down did give me the opportunity to really tap into my introverted intuition and get creative. What started out as the need to fill a blank wall\, ended up as a deep dive into my life stages using collage. The process helped me to see what parts of my personality had been set aside and what my ‘true self’ was about. In this session I will provide some theoretical insights into the nature and formation of the shadow – both the ‘dark’ and ‘light’ shadow – and how we can harness our untapped potential. This session will provide opportunities for participants to consider their own light shadow and is suited to Type users at all levels.  In fact\, you don’t even need to know about Type. \n\n\n\nAbout Angelina Bennet\n\n\n\nAngelina is a Chartered Occupational Psychologist and specializes in developing individuals through personality work. She has an occupational psychology business in the UK offering coaching\, development and assessment. She also type qualification training through Type Pro Ltd. Her other areas of interest centre around people development include transpersonal coaching and the Enneagram. She is a past President of BAPT and the author of ‘The Shadows of Type – Psychological Type through Seven Levels of Development.’ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nConference Details\n\n\n\nAusAPT-2023-sessions-programDownload

SUMMARY:C G Jung's Psychological Types Reading Group with Peter Geyer - Orientation session
DESCRIPTION:Ever wanted to read C G Jung’s Psychological Types but found it challenging or daunting? If so\, you’re not alone! It’s the foundation of all that we do in psychological type and AusAPT\, so we’re pleased to be kicking off the Psychological Types Reading Group with an orientation session on 20 October. \n\n\n\nThe Reading Group will be an opportunity for AusAPT members to read C G Jung’s Psychological Types together over about a year with the guidance of Peter Geyer\, custodian of the Type Research and Practice Collection and long-time researcher and presenter on Jung and Psychological Types. We’ll meet monthly to discuss the concepts and ideas we’ve read. \n\n\n\nThe orientation session is free and open to all on Thursday 20 October\, 7pm – 8:30pm AEST/Melbourne time. But note that you will need to be an AusAPT member once we kick off on 10 November. \n\n\n\nRegister in advance for the 20 October orientation session:https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZItduqorTkvH9ygNM_Z0PncCGG5Ba9MVomw After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the session. We’ll talk more about how the Reading Group will work in the orientation session\, but here are a few key details for once we start: \n\n\n\n1/ We’ll meet on the 2nd Thursday of each month starting 10 November\, 7-8:30pm Melbourne time. \n\n\n\n2/ The Reading Group is FREE for 2022/23 AusAPT members and will run till around October 2023. \n\n\n\n3/ You need to be an AusAPT member to join in the Reading Group from 10 November. \n\n\n\nBelow is advice prepared by Peter Geyer about what to expect with commentary also on editions of the text. \n\n\n\nPeter Geyer\n\n\n\nAdvice ahead of the Orientation session and Reading Group\n\n\n\nThe following is a guide for those interested in engaging with others in an online discussion of C.G. Jung’s book Psychological Types facilitated by Peter Geyer. \n\n\n\nThe discussion involves regular meeting and set reading of chapters or parts of chapters in sequence (some chapters are very long). \n\n\n\nThe emphasis is on what Jung wrote at the time of initial publishing (1921/3) rather than later commentaries\, although these can be part of a discussion. \n\n\n\nThere are many editions of Psychological Types\, even in English\, where there are two translators of the original text: H.G. Baynes (1923) and R.F.C. Hull’s revision  (1971?) \n\n\n\nHere’s one link to what’s available online. A Google search can also be useful. \n\n\n\nAny edition of this text is suitable for the discussion\, as both translations are held in the AusAPT TRPC\, including digital editions of recent publications.  \n\n\n\nThe Baynes translation is preferred for several reasons\, one being an informative preface where the translator explains his perspective. This does not appear elsewhere and will be provided to discussion participants prior to the first session. The language is also that of the period in which Psychological Types written and so appeals to the historically minded. This is not to say that the Hull translation is inadequate\, far from it. \n\n\n\nThe idea of the discussion is to discover and discuss what Jung actually wrote. It isn’t an exercise in dogma and belief. The discussion can involve comments and works of contemporaries if desired. The Collection has several relevant books and articles from the period up to the Second World War. \n\n\n\nApart from the regular meetings\, anticipated to be monthly\, members of the group may contact Peter Geyer at any time if there are queries or a desire for discussion on a particular point. \n\n\n\nYou can download the opening pages of Psychological Types (1923 edition) for pre-reading for the orientation session here: \n\n\n\nOpening pages of 1923 edition of Psychological Types (attached)Download

SUMMARY:The Trimorphic Ethoi of Psychological Types—Vicky Jo Varner

However\, within that discipline\, it can be discerned that there are three prevalent perspectives\, or ethoi\, in conveying the types. This presentation is academic in nature with cutting-edge content\, so be prepared to immerse yourself in something that is philosophically challenging yet rewarding. \n\n\n\nVIcky Jo Varner\n\n\n\nVicky Jo Varner\n\n\n\nDr. Vicky Jo Varner holds a PhD in Depth Psychology with an emphasis on Jungian and Archetypal Studies. SUMMARY:Traditions and Trends in Delivering Type Learning Events - Susan Nash
DESCRIPTION:Traditionally\, type learning events were held in-person. With the pandemic\, those assumptions were challenged and many type professionals have moved their learning and coaching practices to the virtual world. With the emergence from the pandemic\, we are faced with a unique opportunity to reframe how we deliver effective learning type interventions. To what extent can we combine in-person and virtual sessions? How might hybrid sessions work with remote and in-person participants? SUMMARY:Work-Life Balance\, Stress and the Process of Individuation—Mary McGuiness
DESCRIPTION:The individuation process is a term used by Carl Gustav Jung to describe the process of becoming inwardly whole\, discovering one’s true self\, beyond the mask of the persona and ego-centered life. Individuation generally has a profound healing effect on the person. It is a process that allows us to be our most creative and to fulfil the soul’s deepest desire. \n\n\n\nOur busy lives sometimes hinder our growth towards wholeness as the stress reduces our cognitive functioning and emotional intelligence. Work-Life Balance is essential in reducing stress and allowing the process of growth and individuation to occur. We will explore how research has suggested some ‘best practices’ that can help us to prevent stress and improve resilience so that we can function at our best. We will look at these practices and some suggestions Jung gave us on how to facilitate our own growth and individuation. \n\n\n\nMary McGuiness\n\n\n\nMary McGuiness\n\n\n\nMary McGuiness ENFP has 30 years experience teaching personality theory and training professionals to use the MBTI instrument and MajorsPTI. Mary offers certification in the MajorsPTI and Step II and applications of type theory. She is Director of the Institute for Type Development\, a national training organisation established in 1986. Mary served on the National Committee of AusAPT for 10 years\, with two years as National President. She is author of several books and resources including the best-seller You’ve Got Personality. \n\n\n\nThis is a session at the Time & Tide—Traditions and Trends in Type conference\, 7-9 October online. SUMMARY:Type and Music Preferences—Ian Ball
DESCRIPTION:There are many reasons why particular pieces of music attract us and why we go back to those preferences. There are also reasons why particular styles of music are ones we avoid or find unbearable. \n\n\n\nIn 2006 Elwin Hall and I conducted a workshop at the AusAPT conference exploring these ideas and looked for linkages between one’s preferred type and one’s preferences for music. \n\n\n\nThis new session for the conference on Time & Tide: Traditions and Trends in Type reviews the research conducted since then and serves as an update on this theme. The new evidence gives much more confidence about the relationships. There has been a reconceptualisation about music preferences and this will be explained in the session. \n\n\n\nIt is hoped that participants will have a greater appreciation of the linkages between type and preferences for music with particular attributes. \n\n\n\nThis is a session at the Time & Tide—Traditions and Trends in Type conference\, 7-9 October online. SUMMARY:Underutilized Oppositions in the Lenses We Use—Sterling Bates
DESCRIPTION:Underutilized Oppositions in the Lenses We Use: Essential Motivators and Interaction Styles with Sterling Bates \n\n\n\nA talk about an underutilized resource in the world of psychological type\, the 6 dynamics from Essential Motivators (Temperament) and Interaction Styles. They are powerful both in helping you flex to meet someone else’s needs and to discover points of commonality. For example\, every Essential Motivator has both a dynamic that aligns with and two dynamics where they are opposing with the other three Essential Motivators. Like Polarity Thinking\, a key to using dynamics is knowing when it is the right time to flex\, and when it is the right time to rely on your naturally preferred dynamic. \n\n\n\nIn this session\, I will familiarize attendees with the dynamics; those unfamiliar will get a great grounding in the dynamics; and provide tips and tricks attendees can use themselves as well as activities to use in their personal life and with clients. This will include uses in whole type best-fit\, communication\, work problems\, delegation\, Situational Leadership®\, and relationship issues. \n\n\n\nSterling Bates\n\n\n\nSterling Bates\n\n\n\nSterling’s combination of technology\, mathematics\, business\, marketing\, OD and psychological type led him to found Step Research\, a psychology software company. Previously at Disney for 13 years in IT and Marketing; and on the APTi board for 4 years. \n\n\n\nThis is a session at the Time & Tide—Traditions and Trends in Type conference\, 7-9 October online. SUMMARY:Against the Tide: Repositioning the 8 Functions in Psychology—Richard Owen
DESCRIPTION:Since C.G. Jung first described his 8 types of mental processing over 100 years ago\, they were at first neglected\, then later taken up again and developed by type theorists and practitioners. However as Jung’s work was widely disregarded by mainstream psychology academia\, there has been little reconciliation between type theory and areas such as cognitive psychology or modern consciousness studies. In this presentation Richard will share some ideas from his ongoing work on identifying analogous concepts relating to the 8 functions\, in an effort towards reintegrating type and the mainstream. \n\n\n\nRichard Owen\n\n\n\nRichard Owen\n\n\n\nBAPT Treasurer Richard Owen is an organisational psychologist and coach based in Brighton\, UK. A broad theorist of Type: from Jung to MBTI®\, to the depth typology of Dr John Beebe. Richard’s Personality Parts™ model aims to uniquely integrate these & many other perspectives. \n\n\n\nThis is a session at the Time & Tide—Traditions and Trends in Type conference\, 7-9 October online.
