DESCRIPTION:‘10/10’ – Our Final AusAPT Annual Conference\n\n\n\nAusAPT was conceived at a conference — the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator: Australian Perspectives conference\, held in Melbourne in October 1991. \n\n\n\nIn October this year\, we’ll be back in Melbourne for our 20th — and last — AusAPT conference.  \n\n\n\nIn CB radio code\, “10/10” means “transmission completed” — so it’s apt that we’ll gather on the tenth day of the tenth month for our final face-to-face conference\, at Karstens Conference Centre in central Melbourne. \n\n\n\nOur Friday conference program features distinguished figures from the world of personality type\, locally and internationally — Sue Blair\, Mark Toner\, Alex MacFarlane\, and one of AusAPT’s founders\, Peter Malone. \n\n\n\nWe’ve kept the price of our 10/10 Conference low which includes lunch and post-conference drinks. DESCRIPTION:‘I don’t know anything about Art\, but I know what I like.’ This seems a fair statement\, and I wonder if Type strongly influences peoples’ likes or dislikes in Art? \n\n\n\nEveryone has their own personal take on art in its many different forms. Some people are attracted to beauty\, while others enjoy the darker side of the artistic world. Some are merely great at appreciating the talents of others – while some are amazing at partaking in their own creative abilities. \n\n\n\nWe’ll explore these aspects of psychological type and art in an in-person session in Melbourne with Don Kampf. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDON KAMPF\, ENFP\, gained psych degree and post-graduate qualifications and later taught at universities in Business and Law faculties\, whilst operating consulting and coaching practices. Throughout\, he retained an ongoing engagement with art\, with frequent periods of active output in painting and drawing. \n\n\n\nDon participated in many art workshops; through art groups and affiliations\, the National Gallery Society\, Centre for Adult Education and University of the Third Age. He also participated in many art exhibitions and shows including Camberwell Art Show\, Darebin Art Show\, Eight by Eight Art show\, Glen Eira arts and culture\, Ola Cohn Centre and extensive private showings. \n\n\n\nPainting has been Don’s primary pursuit since 2017. Don is a tutor in Art at the University of the Third Age\, Glen Eira. SUMMARY:Elvis Presley: Exploring the 8 Jungian functions & type development with Mary McGuiness
DESCRIPTION:Explore the life and music of Elvis Presley\, his use of the 8 Jungian functions and type development. We will use the work of Gary & Margaret Hartzler to look at differences between poorly developed and well-developed functions. \n\n\n\nThis session is a keynote at the From Shadows to Showtime Conference\, 1-2 September in Brisbane. Further details below. \n\n\n\nEnjoy glimpses of the life and music of Elvis Presley as we explore the 8 Jungian functions and the process of personality development. Type theory tells us that we can use all the 8 Jungian functions (cognitive processes)\, but each type prefers certain functions and struggles to use and develop the others. Gary and Margaret Hartzler in Functions of Type list several skills associated with each of the 8 functions. These skills illustrate why a poorly developed function will be expressed differently to a function that is well developed. By looking at evidence from Elvis’s life\, his music and his own words we will try to identify how he used each function\, how his use of the functions changed over time\, and how the changes were reflected in his music. And we will use the opportunity to reflect briefly on our own use of each function. This session will include theory\, storytelling\, some brief interaction and reflection\, film and\, of course music! \n\n\n\nAbout Mary McGuiness\n\n\n\nMary McGuiness ENFP has 30 years’ experience teaching personality theory and training professionals to use the MBTI and MajorsPTI. She is founding Director of the Institute for Type Development\, est.1986\, providing advanced training for type professionals and consulting to organisations. Mary served for 10 years on the National Committee of AusAPT\, with two years as President. She has published several books and resources on personality\, including the best seller You’ve Got Personality. Further details below. \n\n\n\nAlthough the pandemic wasn’t what anyone asked for\, being in lock down did give me the opportunity to really tap into my introverted intuition and get creative. What started out as the need to fill a blank wall\, ended up as a deep dive into my life stages using collage. The process helped me to see what parts of my personality had been set aside and what my ‘true self’ was about. In this session I will provide some theoretical insights into the nature and formation of the shadow – both the ‘dark’ and ‘light’ shadow – and how we can harness our untapped potential. This session will provide opportunities for participants to consider their own light shadow and is suited to Type users at all levels.  In fact\, you don’t even need to know about Type. \n\n\n\nAbout Angelina Bennet\n\n\n\nAngelina is a Chartered Occupational Psychologist and specializes in developing individuals through personality work. DESCRIPTION:Creating a Type Community and Business in Japan – How I went from charging 100 to 100\,000 yen a session\n\n\n\nHarumi Gondo got off the plane from the US to Tokyo 9 years ago. She barely spoke the language and experienced severe culture shock in Japan. She went from knowing nothing about the culture and knowing no one to managing a busy type community of mothers and a growing business contracting the team of mothers who have now become expert practitioners in Type. \n\n\n\nShe will share her experiences with Japanese mothers\, who highly prioritize conformity and keeping their mouth shut. How can we optimise technology to streamline the learning experience and appeal to different learning styles? SUMMARY:Work-Life Balance\, Stress and the Process of Individuation—Mary McGuiness
DESCRIPTION:The individuation process is a term used by Carl Gustav Jung to describe the process of becoming inwardly whole\, discovering one’s true self\, beyond the mask of the persona and ego-centered life. Individuation generally has a profound healing effect on the person. It is a process that allows us to be our most creative and to fulfil the soul’s deepest desire. \n\n\n\nOur busy lives sometimes hinder our growth towards wholeness as the stress reduces our cognitive functioning and emotional intelligence. Work-Life Balance is essential in reducing stress and allowing the process of growth and individuation to occur. We will explore how research has suggested some ‘best practices’ that can help us to prevent stress and improve resilience so that we can function at our best. SUMMARY:Type and Music Preferences—Ian Ball
DESCRIPTION:There are many reasons why particular pieces of music attract us and why we go back to those preferences. There are also reasons why particular styles of music are ones we avoid or find unbearable. \n\n\n\nIn 2006 Elwin Hall and I conducted a workshop at the AusAPT conference exploring these ideas and looked for linkages between one’s preferred type and one’s preferences for music. \n\n\n\nThis new session for the conference on Time & Tide: Traditions and Trends in Type reviews the research conducted since then and serves as an update on this theme. The new evidence gives much more confidence about the relationships. There has been a reconceptualisation about music preferences and this will be explained in the session. \n\n\n\nIt is hoped that participants will have a greater appreciation of the linkages between type and preferences for music with particular attributes. \n\n\n\nIan Ball\n\n\n\nIan Ball\n\n\n\nIan is a retired Associate Professor from Deakin University. DESCRIPTION:Underutilized Oppositions in the Lenses We Use: Essential Motivators and Interaction Styles with Sterling Bates \n\n\n\nA talk about an underutilized resource in the world of psychological type\, the 6 dynamics from Essential Motivators (Temperament) and Interaction Styles. They are powerful both in helping you flex to meet someone else’s needs and to discover points of commonality. For example\, every Essential Motivator has both a dynamic that aligns with and two dynamics where they are opposing with the other three Essential Motivators. Jung first described his 8 types of mental processing over 100 years ago\, they were at first neglected\, then later taken up again and developed by type theorists and practitioners. However as Jung’s work was widely disregarded by mainstream psychology academia\, there has been little reconciliation between type theory and areas such as cognitive psychology or modern consciousness studies. DESCRIPTION:Midlife is a time when many of us take stock of our life and think about what we want for our future. In this session we will review theories of midlife from the type perspective\, consider the possible accelerating impact of the pandemic\, and consider how to craft the life we want for ourselves. \n\n\n\nAfter reviewing some of the theories of Type Development\, particularly around midlife\, we will take a look at the facts that influence our midlife development. With the opportunity to have some small group discussions\, participants will be able to share experiences and thoughts on the mid-life stage. Now there is widespread interest in popular psychology\, and people are much more aware of their psychological needs.  \n\n\n\nThirty years ago\, leaders in organisations could operate in a command and control way. Now millennials want their leaders to be empathic. The role of the leader-manager is now less an overseer of task completion and more an enabler of self-motivation. \n\n\n\nIn this context\, temperament – which explains why we do what we do – is the perfect tool to enable leaders to lead their team to fulfil their purpose and potential. Catherine’s approach to temperament links our core psychological needs to the essential leadership capabilities of engaging\, developing\, delegating and connecting. DESCRIPTION:Our minds and bodies are intricately connected\, and our brain’s main job is to keep us alive and safe from threats. In this interactive workshop\, we will use an understanding of both the Myers Briggs Type Indicator\, as well as research about how the mind and body are connected\, to better understand unique stressors and ways to proactively and reactively respond to stress through both of these tools. \n\n\n\nDeveloping a deeper understanding of stressors and how to recover from stress is important for self-understanding\, leadership\, and growth\, as well as a key to understanding others. DESCRIPTION:C.G. Jung’s theories of archetype and psychological type are seminal works underlying the psychic structure of personality in individuals. In this session\, an analysis of a large correlational study with the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) instrument and the Pearson-Marr Archetype Indicator (PMAI) assessment will be presented\, analyzed\, and discussed. We will attempt to weave theories (e.g.\, Jung\, Hillman\, Pearson\, Beebe\, Hunziker) with the empirical data to discover together how archetypes and psychological types complement\, challenge\, and deepen one another. \n\n\n\nKesstan BlandinYvonne Nelson-Reid\n\n\n\nKesstan Blandin \n\n\n\nKesstan Blandin\, PhD is the VP\, Research & Development for the Center for Applications of Psychological Type in Gainesville FL\, where she oversees research for Jungian assessments on type (MBTI/MMTIC) and archetype (PMAI).
